Baby Boomer Brands (Blog Assignment 2)

The 15 Biggest Baby Boomer Brands (AdAge.com)

This list was created by a female Baby Boomer-aged writer for CNBC about the most popular brands for the generation. Comprised of people born between 1946 and 1964, this group grew up just as new technology and a changing society made it possible for mass media to become a huge part of American lives as never before. These brands have (mostly) remained popular through decades of changing values and advertising styles, and the Baby Boomer preferences are continually influencing younger generations' tastes.

It's interesting that the popularity of almost every one of these ads is linked to a celebrity spokesperson, a movie, or other facet of popular entertainment. For example, Harley-Davidson reminds people of Easy Rider, a classic movie that defined a generation but is still watched by people of all ages. Levi's became a favorite as they were reminiscent of James Dean, and then later because Jefferson Airplane songs were used in their advertisements (and the new "Go Forth" advertising campaign seems to be returning to these images). Pepsi was, and still is, represented by some of the most famous people of the generation, like Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Tina Turner.

Discussion ideas: What are the brands that our generation will define ourselves with? How might certain brands that are big now have to change/are changing to maintain their popularity? Would this list (which also includes Coach, Frye Boots and Clairol) be significantly different if written by a man?
